Mi Home – Efficient Home Automation
Xiaomi Tech is a Chinese electronics manufacturer that was founded by Lei Jun in 2010. It became the short-term market leader for smartphones in China in December 2013; Huawei is currently the most significant Chinese smartphone manufacturer.
Xiaomi unveiled the Smart Home Kit for in 2015. Initially, the kit contains a set of smart sensors, including the multi-function gateway. Later, the collection included the door/window sensor, the motion detector and besides this, the wireless switch, which can be combined to achieve over 30 different kinds of functions.
Xiaomi Mi Home – Set
The Mi Home Gateway is the basis for the Smarthome System from Xiaomi. With the help of the gateway, many additional actuators like motion detectors, smoke detectors, window sensors etc. can be integrated.
When you think of Smart Home and Smart Security, you often think of expensive products and subscriptions. But it can also be cheap, easy and without subscription with Xiaomi products. Notably, the product range that Xiaomi offers is huge. This article is about a selection of products that can make my home smarter and safer.
Hence, there are only a few systems that offer a high degree of functionality at a reasonable price. But as usual, there is a provider from Asia: Xiaomi.
When you think of smart light, you often think of Philips Hue. They’re pretty cool, but they cost a lot and can’t do much more than the Xiaomi Yeelights. This is also true for the strips, i.e. the strip-shaped LEDs that you stick behind tables, for example. Smart light brings you advantages in that you can control the lights at will by speech control (e.g. Alexa or Google Home). Moreover, by app or remote control and can also create more atmosphere in the room. Ambient Lighting not only influences our mood but also positively stimulates productivity, especially in pulsating form.
The bulbs come with an e27 thread and should fit on most mounting brackets as this is the standard thread form for bulbs. They are available in two versions, which differ in colour. One model can only display a white and yellow light, while the other is RGB LEDs, where you can adjust the colours and tones as you like.
Mi Home Gateway
After connecting them to the router or gateway via the app, you can plug in the Yeelights and the Yeelight Strips using either the app or one of the Xiaomi remote controls. In the app, you can not only adjust colours and brightness but also set scenes with dynamic light and other things, as well as install updates. The Mi App also gives you the possibility to set automated processes according to the “if this, then that” principle. So it is also possible to say that if the alarm is triggered, the lights should blink red or that at a particular time the lamps should be switched on automatically.
The gateway serves as a central base station for connecting multiple Xiaomi Smart Home products. If you want to set up an alarm system with the door sensors or use the cube controller, this is not only required in any case to function at all but is also vital due to the built-in speaker If you want to set up an alarm system. It can get deafening, so most people in the house should hear it.
Of course, you can use this loudspeaker for other things as well, although this seems to be limited to Chinese radio in the app, you don’t buy the gateway for that either. The portal is also surrounded by an LED. This gives coloured feedback and flashes red in case of an alarm, for example. You can also use it as a night light. The LED is colour-adjustable and can also be programmed.
Xiaomi Smart Home – Conclusion
Finally, a list of what modules are available?
- Temperature/Humidity Meter
- Motion detector
- Door/window contacts
- Smart home outlet
- Smart Switch” a freely programmable switch
- Doorbell and many more
As you can see, Xiaomi’s gateway is a great thing. The functionality and design have positively convinced us. It works perfectly, and the setup was straightforward and intuitive. Only the translations are sometimes somewhat confusing.
Unfortunately, in the one or other screenshot, you can often see the English/Chinese mix. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t criticise this too much, as the system is officially not available for the western market. Despite these points, you can work with it very well and have a lot of freedom and possibilities!
However, I still dream of one App, which combines everything, including Velux Roof windows, whereas the current solution Apple HomeKit is just not sufficiently right.
Preferably you order the base device as well as the modules via AliExpress.com.
