Xiaomi mi home from Xiaomi Tech is a Chinese electronics manufacturer founded by Lei Jun in 2010. It became the short-term market leader for smartphones in China in December 2013; Huawei is currently the most significant Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

Xiaomi unveiled the Smart Home Kit in 2015. Initially, the kit contains a set of intelligent sensors, including the multi-function gateway. Later, the collection included the door/window sensor, the motion detector and the wireless switch, which can be combined to achieve over 30 different functions.

Xiaomi Mi home - set

The Mi Home Gateway is the basis for the Smarthome System from Xiaomi. With the help of the gateway, many additional actuators, like motion detectors, smoke detectors, window sensors etc., can be integrated.

When you think of Smart Homes and Smart Security, you often think of expensive products and subscriptions. But it can also be cheap, easy and without a subscription to Xiaomi products.

Notably, the product range that Xiaomi offers is huge. This article is about a selection of products that can make my home smarter and safer.

Hence, only a few systems offer a high degree of functionality at a reasonable price. But as usual, there is a provider from Asia: Xiaomi.

Gateway - the starting point

After connecting them to the router or gateway via the App, you can plug in the Yeelights and the Yeelight Strips using either the App or one of the Xiaomi remote controls. The App can adjust colours and brightness, set scenes with dynamic lights, and install updates. The Mi App also allows you to develop automated processes according to the “if this, then that” principle. So it is also possible to say that if the alarm is triggered, the lights should blink red or the lamps should be switched on automatically at a particular time.

The gateway is a central base station connecting multiple Xiaomi Smart Home products. If you want to set up an alarm system with the door sensors or use the cube controller, this is not only required in any case to function at all but is also vital due to the built-in speaker. Suppose you want to set up an alarm system. It can get deafening, so most people in the house should hear it.

Of course, you can also use this loudspeaker for other things, although this seems limited to Chinese radio in the App; you don’t buy the gateway for that either. An LED also surrounds the portal. This gives coloured feedback and flashes red in case of an alarm, for example. You can also use it as a night light. The LED is colour-adjustable and can also be programmed.

As you can see, Xiaomi’s gateway is a great thing. The functionality and design have positively convinced us. It worked perfectly, and the setup was straightforward and intuitive. Only the translations are sometimes somewhat confusing.

China only - language help

However, you often witness an English/Chinese text and message mix. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t criticise this too much, as the system is officially unavailable for the western market. Please use China as the Country and your language for the App. Despite these points, you can work with it very well and have a lot of freedom and possibilities!

However, I still dream of one App, which combines everything, including Velux Roof windows, whereas the current solution Apple HomeKit is just not sufficiently right.

Preferably you order the base device as well as the modules via AliExpress.com.

  2. I am so impressed with the Xiaomi Mi Home. The products are sleek and high-quality and the app is easy to use. I love being able to control my home from my phone. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a smart home solution that is affordable and functional.

  3. The Xiaomi Mi Home is a smart home ecosystem that allows you to control all your devices from one central hub. With the Mi Home app, you can easily control lights, thermostats, cameras and more. This makes it easy to create a smart home that is tailored to your needs.

  4. Xiaomi is a brand that has been gaining popularity in recent years, and for good reason. Their products are high-quality, innovative, and affordable. Their smartphones are packed with features and performance that rival those of more expensive brands. Their home appliances, such as air purifiers, are well-designed and efficient. The Xiaomi Mi Home ecosystem is a great way to connect and control all the devices in your home from one central hub. Overall, Xiaomi offers great value for money, and I highly recommend their products to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable brand.

  5. Just give it a try. I have a temperature sensor that is coupled with a lamp, so I can see immediately whether I can go to work without a jacket.

  6. Xiaomi mi home is straightforward to install. I got a starter kit from AliExpress and am pleased with it.

  7. Xiaomi is light years ahead of the other vendors in intelligent homes. Order a set on Aliexpress and see for yourself.

  8. At first, I was thrilled with the Xiaomi mi Home products. Then I had to experience that the quality is not as good as expected and the customer service is pretty much the worst I have ever experienced.

  9. For lack of a cheaper alternative, I also opted for this system. It is not better or worse than a system that costs 10 times more.

  10. I rent a flat in a tax-friendly place where I am almost never. With Xiaomi, I play around with the lights and make the flat look lived in. Even the neighbour said that I probably have my office in the flat, because the lights burn here and there and I have also installed other devices that can be activated so that the electricity bill looks like something.

  11. Why doesn’t Xiaomi take better care of its GUI? It is a great effort to reintegrate lost accessories.

  12. I don’t care if it comes from China – I would not install a cam, but the rest, I don’t care if they know the temperature in my apartment.
