48 teams will participate in the 2026 World Cup for the first time. At the previous World Cups, there were 32.

Instead of eight groups of four, there will now be 16 groups with three teams each. In addition, there will be a sixteen-team final, for which all first and second-placed teams will qualify. This will increase the number of World Cup matches from 64 to 80, but the teams will still play seven games until the final.

The exact dates for the 2026 World Cup have not yet been fixed. However, what is known is that they are to fall from June to July 2026.

The venues
The 16 venues are spread over eleven locations in the USA, three in Mexico and two in Canada.
