Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people who fall ill with COVID-19 have mild to moderate symptoms and get better without needing any special medical treatment. However, in some cases, the disease becomes severe and affected people need medical care.
HOW THE VIRUS SPREADS
The virus can be transmitted from the mouth or nose of an infected person by coughing, sneezing, talking, singing or breathing. This happens through small liquid particles in the air. Their size can range from fine aerosols to larger droplets.
You can get infected if you are near someone who has COVID-19 and breathe in the virus. You can also become infected if you touch a surface that has the virus on it and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Indoors and in situations with many people in a confined space, the virus can spread more easily.
