The future of radio

It was only with the invention of the MP3 format in the 1990s that all music ever recorded could land on the Internet – albeit as a pirated copy, past the initially powerful record companies. As a result, the Napster music exchange became a symbol of the new era.

After the business model of this new industry seemed to vanish into thin air, Apple saved the day: The Apple iPod player and Apple iTunes downloads for 99 cents per song convinced consumers to pay money for music again. Finally, the legal purchase was as convenient as pirated copies before.

The next step was streaming, in which the titles do not have to be stored on the device in the first place, but are played directly from the net. The success of Spotify is based on this. Nevertheless, the start-up from Sweden, which went online in several European countries on 7 October 2008 after a deal with the music companies.

Originally founded in 2006, Spotify is one of the oldest music streaming services. As a result, Spotify has become firmly established in the market as the industry leader. According to Spotify, 217 million people use its services. Of these, around 100 million use their paid subscription. Besides, Spotify is now available in 79 countries and houses 3 billion playlists.

Spotify Subscriptions

As a result, a considerable proportion of the widespread use of the free version with limited functions financed by advertising has contributed to this. However, as an alternative, there is a premium version for CHF 12.95 per month with extended features. As a rule, Spotify Premium can be tested free of charge for 30 days and, if not cancelled, automatically becomes a regular subscription with costs. Also, the company offers a family tariff for up to 6 participants at CHF 19.90 (as of July 2019).

In any case, Spotify has an extensive range of supported devices and platforms. After all, the music streaming service is available as an app for iOS and Android. Nevertheless, there is still a standalone player for Mac and Windows computers – otherwise, access to Spotify music is also possible via web player in the browser. As a result, Spotify can also be used on other devices. The partners include many audio manufacturers such as Sonos and Teufel.

Number of songs

Meanwhile, millions of songs are available from music streaming providers. As a result, the Spotify music library has grown to more than 50 million songs. Since then, more than 20,000 new songs have been added every day, according to Spotify. As a result, the catalogue is growing steadily.

Our Favourite Spotify Playlist

Quality

Spotify uses the Ogg Vorbis format for music streaming and streams in different quality levels. Meanwhile, the tracks are delivered on the desktop at 160 kilobits per second, which is a quality difference from the compact disc, but at best only audible to hi-fi enthusiasts. Finally, those who want better quality can switch from the free to the premium version: in the web player, “streaming with high quality” can be selected in the settings under Playback, which corresponds to a bit rate of 320 kilobits per second, however based on our experience requires a good WLAN setup such as Netgear Orbi.

Apart from the large music selection, as well as successful apps, not least the broad platform support with outstanding performance and various comfort functions – Spotify has many advantages and is rightly very popular and widespread. For casual listeners, there is still the free offer financed by advertising. Spotify is correctly at the forefront of music streaming services.
